The definition of a bridge is :-
- 1. A structure spanning and providing passage over a gap or barrier, such as a river or roadway.
- 2. Something resembling or analogous to this structure in form or function: a land bridge between the continents; a bridge of understanding between two countries.
I know the people that read my blog don’t need an English lesson, but bear with me, because if we consider the second definition in the context of my transition journey, I can very easily construct an analogous bridge.
The interesting thing about a bridge, the structure of a bridge, is that there has to be support. It doesn’t matter what form that support comes in, the span needs to be held somehow, otherwise the bridge simply cannot be.
I am incredibly fortunate that my analogous bridge has some solid support. I have arches, I have cantilevers, trusses and suspension. I’m not sure I deserve it, and I am certainly uncertain as to why, but the bridge upon which I am currently taking my first tentative steps would appear to be remarkably well supported.
Today along with a couple of incredible people, I took a few more steps out onto the span between the two points my bridge is connecting.
I am deeply moved by the support of the people in my life who have become a part of my journey. From the relative strangers who embrace me warmly on the day we meet, through to the close friends who get to see through the thick leather jacket and tinted visor.
If you are one of those people propping up the span between me and my destination please accept my sincere thanks.
