On Monday evening Jane and I will be heading to Bunbury to record a lengthy interview for regional WA Radio.
Suzanne , Jane, and hopefully our remarkable kids, will be telling our story, openly, honestly and if I can shake the nerves, Boldly too.
This may, or may not be a good idea…..
Yes I am still shy, yes I am still terrified of public exposure, but I see the potential for a number of benefits arising from this opportunity.
Firstly what better way to confront a fear, than head on. The way I see it, the more people that know my story, the less I have to worry about sharing it.
Secondly, I can see huge potential for offering encouragement to other Trans people who may be struggling. Sharing with them my story of almost universal acceptance, support and encouragement could be a tremendously powerful force for positive change in their lives.
Finally I want to deliver a message of respect. Putting this challenging topic on the agenda in a small community will raise awareness, and if we get the message right, it should also encourage understanding and acceptance. The goal is to encourage respect for the full range of diversity.
At yesterdays voice therapy session, I politely asked the wonderful Anna, if she could have Suzanne’s voice ready for Monday. We worked hard in the session, and Anna gave me some useful strategies, however like it or not the listeners will not have any difficulty in establishing if it is Suzanne or Jane that is talking……
It is going to be a real challenge. Taking Suzanne into a Studio to air a deeply personal saga of self discovery, battling self loathing, and finally delivering a message of hope, that is just starting to emerge. Its going to be tough, so tough, that dinner in Mojos afterwards is going to be more welcome than usual.
