Apart from the chaos that has been my working life this week, there have been a couple of events worthy of reporting…..
On Wednesday evening Jane and I attended the usual weekly “Film Harvest” event at the local cinema. This week the film had been sponsored by my lovely friend from the On the Plus Side clothes shop. She had done a remarkable job pulling together a gala style event, and she succeeded in turning the whole evening into a spectacular soiree. It was outstandingly organised and well attended, which added to the lively bubbly atmosphere.
Of course I wasn’t just there to enjoy myself. I was on hand with a Camera to grab a few photos for D, and prepared to share a little of my story with the ladies at the event. With a role to play, and desire to appear at my very best, I had decided to have my makeup done. A real professional makeover.
It was a very relaxing experience, chatting to the lovely T. whilst she busied herself painting my face. The whole process was over fairly quickly, and having concluded with a few final delicate touches, I was invited to look in the mirror. Of course, I still struggle with my appearance and initially I was reluctant to look at the results and managed to avoid my reflection for an hour or so. I can never remember a single moment when I have looked in the mirror and smiled……But on Wednesday the 7th of September it happened. I really smiled. It was a momentous occasion, ground breaking, life changing and deeply satisfying. I found myself having two or three more furtive glances, just to make sure, and yes, I was still smiling.
Ironically, or perhaps poetically, the movie of the evening was “Embrace” and it tells the stories of some remarkable women around the world. These were stories about overcoming cultural notions of Beauty and Body Size and Shape and loving the body they have. It was powerful, confronting and motivating.
The movie is the work of an inspirational Australian woman called Taryn Bumfritt, who has founded a whole movement….
Its well worth a look, but I will finish this post with the delightful notion that……. #ihaveembraced
