Speak Easy…..Ohhhhh Yeaaahhhhhhhh

Last Friday I farewelled my Speech Therapist, AW. She headed East to work at a Hospital and I was left feeling  a little abandoned. I invested heavily in her service, and hoped we would work through to a satisfactory conclusion.

That, I am constantly misgendered on the phone tells me  that there is still someway to go.

I’m working on what comes next, I clearly need more help in this area. The remaining local speech therapists all turned down my recent approaches for ongoing therapy. This didn’t do my confidence any good at all, but I was assured they were just mindful of the complexities of Transgender Voice Therapy.

There is a potential solution, but I am not sure how far off that is.

At our final session, AW and I  spent a few minutes looking at the data she collected from my very first appointment, through to the final recording she made, just a few days before our final appointment. It was encouraging.

Looking at the charts and other data analysis, there is undoubtedly evidence of  a real change in my voice. There is an upward shift in pitch of some considerable magnitude. On the face of it, that pitch change and anecdotal evidence of improved quality is marvellous news.

However the constant challenges to my Gender on the phone leads me to conclude I must have sounded like Barry White 12 months ago…..

You will get there and don’t give up. I could not afford a speech therapist. I taught myself and I don;t get misgendered. I listened to cis women and copied them. My pitch changed quite a bit but my tonality and inflections changed more.
