Henri Cartier Bresson (HCB) was amongst other things, a most remarkable photographer. He was a founder member of the Magnum photo agency, and a talented artist. Henri Bresson is also responsible for some of the most famous photographs ever taken. When shooting, he often waited for what he called “The Decisive Moment.” This being the instant when all the elements in the viewfinder of his camera worked to produce a photograph that was composed to perfection.
It is almost one year since I legally changed my name and today I had a decisive moment. The huge number of complex components that is my life lined up, and the decisive moment unfolded before my eyes.
In what was a genuinely moving and significant moment, I recognised me. I saw no trace of my former self. There I was. I felt no revulsion. There was just a deeply satisfying acknowledgement that the Suzanne I have known for so long, is now as real as I always knew she was.
I celebrated with a photo, Jane took the shot, that I promptly shared, very proudly, with the world.
It has to be said that I had some help, a very talented lady who liberated from within a look I didn’t know I had. What Taryn achieved today was remarkable, something special happened, something that went way deeper than makeup and brushes.
This was a truly decisive moment, and I am hoping that like some of Henri Bresson’s images, this feeling will last much longer than that split second.
