With Self Esteem at a record low, a little while ago, I began exploring alternative solutions. Google is a most wonderful tool. If you can peel away the layers of internet nonsense and commercial thuggery that the Google Robots deliver with any search, there is a great deal of potential.
Nested deeply within my desperate search for a Self Esteem Silver Bullet, I eventually found two or three links that looked like they promised real help, and the first one I followed up, seems to have revealed a rich seam of pure Gold.
For the last few weeks I have been enjoying the company of a very special group of people….Their page on the meet up page has a wealth of information, but the “About Us” is what caught my eye :-
“Anybody who wants to improve their communication and leadership skills, improve self confidence and self esteem.”
Bunbury Toastmasters is part of the International Toastmasters Group, an organisation dedicated to helping people develop Communication, Speaking and Leadership skills. They have not only welcomed me into their group, but they have actively encouraged and inspired me.
Since transitioning, Public Speaking, and indeed its more commonplace brother, just being in Public is a challenge for me. It is of course getting easier, but we can all use a little help…
At only my second meeting with the club, I presented my first speech to the other members and guests. I talked about the two occasions in my my life when I have found myself homeless. I tried to lighten the talk with a little humour, but at the same time kept it raw and visceral.
I am no stranger to Public Speaking, in the months since starting my transition, I have presented to quite a few fairly large audiences, and on each occasion I felt the message was hampered by my technique.
The Toastmasters organisation offers a structured program of development towards confident speaking, called the “Competent Communicator.” which I know is going to help.
But the level of acceptance and inclusion that the members of Bunbury Toastmasters has already demonstrated has already given me a healthy boost to a seriously flagging morale.
I’m going to charge my glass and raise it this evening.
“To Bunbury Toastmasters.” – #chink #glugglug #ithinkimgoingtobeok
