Over the last 27 years Jane and I have been invited to quite a few “Fancy Dress Parties” (Dress Ups for my Australian Friends) Sometimes themed, and sometimes just an invitation to get creative with a Costume. In theory its a great idea, and I would have loved to attended every single one of them in a fabulous costume…
But I have avoided them all, because my Gender Incongruence presented me with far too many dilemmas. One might suppose that Pre Transition, these parties would have offered me a perfect opportunity to express myself. The problem is,that getting into “Drag” for a Dress Up party more often than not involves over the top Parodies of Women, and this is just not me. Beneath my rather awkwardly shaped frame,is Suzanne, and that is where she always has been. I had no intention of being a Parody, whilst struggling to maintain a facade, hiding a vey real woman.
Now as I have entered a new phase in my journey, we have our first invitation to a “Dress Up” A themed party to celebrate with some new friends, on the occasion of their Wedding. I feel certain the Party will be great fun, and a chance, to celebrate a very special event. There will also be some remarkable themed Costumes, of that I can be certain too. But here I discover a new dilemma…..
I may be over thinking, but I imagine a scenario, where the other guests, who do not know me, assume that I am “Dressed” for the party. It may not happen, but I can see it unfolding. My over active synapses are already hearing conversations such as this “Whose the Dude in Drag ?” ” Those nails look amazing, he’s really gone to town with that costume” etc. etc.
Having said that, I am determined it will not stop me…..I’m going to make it work. There may have to be awkward conversations but if the Hosts want Costumes and Joy, that is what I am going to try and give them….
What is my costume, I can’t possibly say, but I may be practicing delivering the line “Dr. Livingstone I presume ?” in my very best, feminine voice…..
