New Experience – Day #14

How many of us get in a lift, and push the button that usually looks something like this “><”  in an attempt to close the doors, and accelerate the process of getting to the destination floor… ?

Bad news I am afraid, those buttons are rarely, if ever operative. Bash it all you like, but the doors will close when they are ready, and you don’t have an iota of control over them.

I know it feels good, “I’m pushing a button, and so I’m effectively controlling something.”  The sensation of being in control is important for many of us, and if a disconnected button can induce that sensation, then it can’t be a bad thing right ?

I was stuck in a lift once. Not a pleasant experience. No amount of panicked button bashing was going to get that increasingly cramped capsule moving. It was out of my control, and it didn’t feel great.

After the optimism of yesterday, I am confronted by an unyielding Monday. A Monday that refused to budge, a Monday that didn’t give a millimetre. A Monday that was as Stoic as I am Weak.  I’m sitting here now licking my wounds after charging headlong into a Week constructed from concrete and steel. A Monday that has closed around me like that lift, firmly wedged into it’s shaft.

I’m looking for the buttons I can press to help me feel like I’m in control, because right now, even a button that gave me the illusion of control, would be better than being a passenger in a lift jammed shut. To quote one of my all time favourite movies at least it’s stuck, and not “a one way express elevator to Hell. Going Down” (C) Aliens.

I think you actually have been stuck in a lift two times. The message being, you did get out eventually, life doesn’t always go the way you want, but it never stays still. Breath, try to find something positive to take from the experience, build on that. Just don’t burn out trying to make something happen because it might not be the right time. Now might be a time of contemplation.

Don’t feed the fear wolf. Feed the courage wolf.
