Tell me about what motivates you…..

Over the years I’ve attended a few interviews….I’m not including in this list the cosy roadside chats with the local Policeman whose line of questioning is on the whole  more predictable, and therefore less stressful. “Do you know what the speed limit is on this stretch of road..?” etc…

Typically job interviews  didn’t bother me too much. Put on a suit, turn up, answer the questions, get the job and away I go. Telephone interviews were even easier I didn’t even have to get a suit dry cleaned.

Things are about to get a whole heap more complicated. Strictly speaking Suzanne has never had an interview and this is where it gets interesting. The whole process of recruitment just became ever so slightly intimidating. In a report published just this week, statistics collected in the UK showed that one in three employers would be less likely to hire a Transgender Person….This compares quite neatly with the statistic that reports unemployment amongst Transgender people at 300% greater than the National average. I am essentially the same person, yet suddenly vastly less attractive as an employee…

I could exclaim “Bugger” throw up my arms in disgust and wait for the support to Trickle in. Or I can work towards real change and strive for acceptance not tolerance.

Guess what I’m going to do….

Sometimes you have to be the exception to the stats. Not only that, you are clearing the pathway for those who follow, somebody has to, you know you will do a good job. Also this is not the UK ….

I’ve been there many times and it is why I set up TEPA. TEPA is designed to help you learn how as a trans woman you can gain back some of that “attractiveness as an employee” It isn’t right that you have to but it also isn’t right that women in male dominated workplaces are expected to shoulder the burden of representing all women (Kanter, 1977) when men are placed under no such expectations.

Two out of three … transgender status wouldn’t affect their hiring decision. Not where it should be but we know there is bigotry in the world so let’s consider that a good starting point!

    You’ve got this

I do love statistics! What is it they say? Lies, damned lies, and statistics?!

Of course, how we feel about the statistics depends on whether we look at absolute risk versus relative risk.

So, if the local unemployment rate is 6%, and the unemployment rate for Australia is the same as the United Kingdom when it comes to transgender people (300% higher), we are looking at 18%. That’s 82% that will get a job; if you are still willing to be so moved by statistics… now being the gorgeous, talented, giving, experienced, and lovely lady you are, if you don’t fall within that 82% I will eat my shoe – on camera, online, and on your blog!

It seems there was a lady who went for a job interview was asked about her character strengths, which she described just as rehearsed. When asked about her weaknesses our lady replied “Apparently I’m too honest”. The interviewer replied “I don’t think that’s a weakness”.

“I really don’t give a f*ck what you think”…. I bet she got the job. He he he.
