"I thought you'd turned for a minute"

I’ve often wondered when it would happen. I guess it was inevitable.

Fate dictated that tonight was the night…..

It was a cool evening in Busselton. The warm glow from inside our Favourite bar beckoning invitingly after the short brisk walk from the Cinema.

Unusually Jane left me to order the drinks and food, and disappeared to find somewhere cosy to sit.

Although inside was busy, there were only two people stood at the bar, and I was one of them. This being the case when I heard “Hi my names Tim..”I really hoped  that “Tim” was answering his phone. A quick glance to my right told a different story. Tim, a tall, slim, gent wearing a well kept white beard, and displaying some impressive ink on his arm,  was extending his hand and clearly expecting a response.

It is probably a good job I was wearing a little more makeup this evening, as hopefully that would have masked the deep shade of crimson that I could feel my face turning. Resisting the very powerful urge to run, I extended my own hand, whereupon it was warmly embraced, as Tim wrapped both his hands around mine and tenderly squeezed. “And you are…….?”  Tim asked, after obviously getting bored waiting for me to tell him.

A number of potential humorous responses to this question were quickly dismissed, and I plumped for a conventional… “Hi, I’m Suzanne.” Conventional, but for me still a novelty.

I couldn’t help noticing that my hand was still being gently squeezed, not uncomfortable on a physical level, but causing a number of alarm bells to ringing in my head. The arrival of the bill, gave me an opportunity to liberate my hand to extract my purse and pay the bill.

“I think I’ve seen you in here before..” Tim suggested helpfully, which in my brain instantly became “Do you come here often ?”

“Yes its quite likely.” I replied, before adding “Usually with my partner.” Just to be on the safe side.

I’m not entirely certain how it happened, but the conversation got round to motorcycles….Tim used to ride Nortons, now he has a couple of Harleys and the conversation ebbed and flowed around this topic for a little while…..Time stands still when talking bike, and I am really not sure how long we chatted, but I became aware that Jane’s drink was sat on the Bar in front of me, and she was elsewhere probably wondering what had happened.

I bade Tim a friendly farewell and went to find Jane….

“Oh, your back.” she said half smiling and peering over the top of her glasses. “I thought you’d turned for a minute !”
